Blantyre Residents Face Water Tariff Hike Amid Calls for Transparency

The Blantyre Water Board's recent decision to increase water tariffs has sparked controversy, prompting the Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) to demand a public release of the official gazette detailing the changes. The unexpected hike has left many residents of Blantyre concerned about the affordability of essential services.

CAMA's spokesperson, John Banda, emphasized the need for clarity. "The people of Blantyre deserve to know why their water bills have increased. We urge the Ministry of Water and Sanitation to provide a detailed account of the reasons behind this decision," he said.

The tariff increase is reportedly part of a larger initiative to upgrade the city's water infrastructure, which includes repairing old pipelines and expanding clean water access to underserved areas. However, the lack of communication from the Ministry has led to skepticism and frustration among the citizens.

Residents have taken to social media to voice their concerns, with many questioning the timing and necessity of the increase. "We understand the need for improvements, but we also need transparency. How can we trust that the extra money we're paying will actually be used for the intended purposes?" asked Mary Phiri, a local resident.
