Malawi Increases Social Cash Transfer Program Payments by 71%

Blantyre, Malawi — The Ministry of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare has taken a significant step to enhance the well-being of vulnerable citizens by increasing payments under the Social Cash Transfer Programme (SCTP). Minister Jean Sendeza announced this development, emphasizing the importance of responsible registration to ensure that deserving individuals benefit from the program.

Key Highlights

1. Payment Increase: The SCTP beneficiaries will now receive an average monthly amount of K15,000, reflecting a 71% increase. This boost aims to alleviate financial hardships faced by vulnerable households across the country.

2. Expanded Beneficiary Base: The number of beneficiaries has grown from 293,000 to 325,000, allowing more families to access essential financial support. Minister Sendeza expressed optimism that this expansion would positively impact the lives of those in need.

3. Traditional Authorities' Recognition: The SCTP has garnered recognition from Traditional Authorities, including T/A Zilakoma in Nkhata-bay. These local leaders acknowledge the program's role in enhancing families' ability to support themselves and contribute to their communities.

4. Ongoing Registration: New beneficiary registrations are currently underway in select districts. The Ministry encourages eligible individuals to participate in the registration process promptly.
